Major traditional medicine systems around the world have long revered Hawthorn Medicine, especially for its use as a heart and circulatory system tonic. Reliably hawthorn even finds its way into working with the emotional heart, as you’ll see referenced below.

Hawthorn supports healthy

  • heart rhythm

  • blood pressure (whether the concern is high or low)

  • circulation

  • artery, vein, and capillary flexibilty and integrity

  • cognitive function

  • And for the following concerns: arrhythmia, heart “pangs”, tachycardia, heart congestion, arterial plaque, painful legs from poor blood flow, angina, recovery after a cardiac event

  • as well as grief, heartbreak, and stress
This is a quote from Avena Botanicals that I think is as beautiful as it is true,
Hawthorn… helps to comfort us when we feel vulnerable, tender hearted, or grief-stricken. Hawthorn’s energy encourages us to care thoughtfully for ourselves, our relationship with others, and the greater landscape of life. Assisting to calm and settle the emotional heart, lessen grief and irritation, and ease us into deeper rest and restoration as needed. ‘

  • In Traditional Chinese Medicine, hawthorn berry is well used for digestive health, especially where there is diffiiculty digesting rich fats and protein or when there is stagnant digestion.

Is it best for one to use hawthorn Leaf and Flower, Berry, or a combination?

That’s a good question with different answers, depending on who you talk to.
All parts have an affinity for supporting heart function. Some practitioners prefer one over another, and speaking generally I prefer to work with a combination.

Notes for suggested use:
Doses for glyerites (alcohol-free extracts) are often higher than their alcohol extracted counterparts. This is because for many of the phytochemicals we wish to extract from herbs for health benefits, alcohol is a more efficient extractor.

Alcohol extracts suggested use:
12-36 drops depending on need and severity of concern up to four times per day in a small amount of water or juice on an empty stomach or before a meal.

Alcohol-free extracts:
16-45 drops depending on need and severity of concern up to four times per day in a small amount of water or juice on an empty stomach or before a meal.

All of the following extracts are vegan-friendly
