The hard exterior shell is meant to protect it. If consumed whole, it will leave your body basically the same as it went it. But all of the nutrition is inside!

You can grind them in a coffee grinder. Or you can buy pre-ground flax, but…
pre ground flax loses many of its good qualities within a couple of weeks.
The good fats go rancid, for example.

Note:

Suggested use:
The Mayo Clinic suggests 1-2 tablespoons of ground flax per adult per day. It’s very important to extra water as additional fiber without moisture can cause constipation.
